Could Alzheimer's Disease Be CONTAGIOUS?
Lab research shows that Alzheimer's can actually spread through direct contact
Alex Reid here with your weekly roundup of the TOP health and wellness stories from around the web.
Today, we have a breaking story about the potential for CONTAGIOUS Alzheimer's disease.
This... is not good news.
Now, we have shared some stories about incredible breakthroughs in treating neurodegenerative diseases, but even still, Alzheimer's is one of the scariest and most serious diseases we face.
And what scientists have discovered is that the beta-amyloid plaques that cause Alzheimer's behave disturbingly similar to prions.
Prions are the deadly molecules that cause brain disease in animals and have long been known to be transmissible between animals. This is what is behind outbreaks of mad cow disease.
But these scientists were able to recreate a similar situation in the lab with the molecules that cause brain disease in humans.
To be clear, this isn't something you can catch from someone sneezing — you would have to be directly exposed to the brain cells themselves — but it is something to be aware of in specialized medical situations like brain surgery.
The researchers also warn about medical devices that directly touch the eyeball, as these could potentially spread the molecules as well.
Of course, it's ALWAYS crucial to have medical equipment properly sterilized, but that's a situation where you really don't want to take any risks.
Here's the full deep dive from Scientific American: "The Case for Transmissible Alzheimer's."

In other wellness news, if you think your prescriptions are costing more than they should, you're not crazy. It turns out that more than 700 affordable generic drugs — over 43% — are simply being sat on by big pharmaceutical companies.
Even though they could easily sell these cheaper alternatives, they're simply keeping them off the market.
That story from Kaiser Health News is right here.
And finally, something we're very excited about:
An Israeli team claims an incredible breakthrough in curing cancer.
While they've been met with skepticism, the science behind these incredible peptides that "eat" cancer cells (while sparing healthy human cells) is sound in principle and is expected to move to human trials this year.
