New research indicates cinnamon is good for a lot more than just baking.

According to a study just published in the BMC Journal of Complementary and Alternative Medicine, a special variety of cinnamon may have potent anti-cancer effects.

The joint project between the National Park Service, Andong National University, and Kyonggi University in South Korea isolated extracts of Cinnamon cassia -- also known as Chinese cinnamon -- to study its anti-proliferative effects on cancer cells.

The scientists discovered that the cinnamon extract was able to halt the reproduction of human colorectal cancer cells and trigger apoptosis (cell death).

Cinnamon cassia decreased the cyclin D1 protein levels of the cancer cells, which is a key protein that allows cancer cells to infiltrate and spread to the healthy cells around them.

At the same time, the cinnamon extract killed off the cancerous cells by activating special protein complexes known as NF-κB and ATF3.

In effect, the activation of the proteins caused the cancer cells to “go nuclear” and destroy themselves.

Based on the tremendous results of the Cinnamon cassia extract, the researchers concluded that it is a prime candidate to study for “the development of chemoprevention or therapeutic agents for human colorectal cancer.”

But that’s just one of the many incredible health benefits of cinnamon

The use of cinnamon to treat a variety of ailments goes back millennia, with records its medicinal properties dating as far back as ancient Egypt.

In fact, cinnamon was considered so valuable that it was often a gift for kings.

There are two main varieties of this wonder spice:

1.     Ceylon Cinnamon, or “true” cinnamon

2.     Cassia cinnamon, the most common type of cinnamon and the type that was used in the cancer study

To make cinnamon, the stems of the cinnamomum tree are cut, and then the inner part of the bark is extracted and dried.

During the drying process, the bark naturally curls into rolls, forming the distinctive look of cinnamon sticks.

The sticks are then ground to create cinnamon powder.

The main compound in cinnamon is cinnamaldehyde and its responsible for most of cinnamon’s amazing benefits.

Cinnamaldehyde has been shown to:

●     Lower Blood Sugar and Fight Diabetes

Cinnamon reduces the amount of glucose that enters your bloodstream after a meal by manipulating certain enzymes in your digestive tract, which slows down the digestion of carbohydrates. This protects you from blood sugar “spikes.” (1)

●     May Slash the Risk of Heart Disease

Cinnamon reduces levels of LDL and increases heart-healthy HDL levels. It’s also been shown to reduce blood pressure in animal studies. (2,3,4)

●     Reduce Inflammation

Studies indicate that cinnamon has a wide variety of antioxidants that mop up damaging inflammatory compounds over your entire body, including your joints and organs.(5)

●     Shield Your Brain from Neurodegenerative Disease

Cinnamon contains two compounds which have been shown to protect your brain form the buildup of tau proteins — one of the key markers of Alzheimer’s disease. It’s also been shown to improve the symptoms of mice with Parkinson’s disease, like motor function and neurotransmitter levels. (6,7,8,9)

What’s more, cinnamon is chock full of powerful phytochemicals and polyphenols, powerful antioxidants that protect the body from stress and aging. (10,11,12)

In fact, in a study that compared the antioxidant levels of 26 different superfoods, herbs, and spices, cinnamon beat all of them.(13)

The Bottom Line: Cinnamon is an Incredible Natural Medicine

But believe it or not, it’s only one of many natural health solutions that can fight disease and help you achieve great health…

At just a fraction of the cost of mainstream treatment options.
