Shocking cure for autism and more [Roundup]
This "Frankenstein" treatment may offer hope for the severely autistic
Alex Reid here with your Monday Roundup.
I have to start by setting the stakes high.
I'm talking life or death.
And that's just the nature of the work we do. If you want to run a health and wellness company, you have to deal with literal life and death issues.
But that means our work often looks grim.
And I actually veto stories my research team brings me for being needlessly dark. But some dark stories, like our trending story about the link between mustard gas and cancer treatment, are too important and have too much valuable knowledge for our readers not to publish...
But sometimes a ray of hope cuts through.
And after a deeply negative news cycle, we're thrilled to see this remarkable story about an experimental therapy for autism.
The treatment is called “deep brain stimulation,” and it uses electrical impulses physically embedded in the brain to “reset” brain function.
The story is called “Rebooting Becky's brain,” and here's the key takeaway:
An electrical brain implant all but erased the obsessions that had consumed Becky Audette, years after her autism diagnosis. Could similar implants help other people with severe autism?
This may sound like science fiction, but this technology is being supported by cold, hard research, with some of the top scientists in the world from Germany, Japan, and Caltech leading the charge.
Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is also showing promise for neurodegenerative conditions like Parkinson's and other conditions that many of us may face personally.
It's still in the early stages, but as you can see from Becky's trial, there's real human evidence that this treatment can help.
We'll keep you posted as the story develops.

Organ transplants and replacements are on track to become far cheaper and easier thanks to the advent of medical 3D printing.
For all the negativity in the news, the future of health holds tremendous promise!
Now, we do have to bring things back to reality for a moment with some health recall news.
