The Miracle Benefits of Propolis

Propolis is most well known as the sticky substance bees use to repair and protect their hives against damage or invaders. It is created by the bees using tree sap and wax. However, the stuff has also been shown to have a multitude of health benefits to people as well. It has long been used medicinally across Europe but has only recently started to make a buzz in the states.propolis honey

The health benefits of propolis are vast and varied, but perhaps most notable are its antibiotic effects. Studies have shown the substance inhibits the growth of bacteria including those causing pneumonia, strep, and staph, and it may even help prevent cancer. But propolis has also been shown to have anti-inflammatory, antiviral, anti-fungal, and immune boosting properties.

Endrometriosis is an autoimmune disease which may affect 10 percent of all women in the United States and can cause infertility. In a study by Darin Ingels, doctor of naturopathic medicine, women taking bee propolis to increase fertility had a 60 percent pregnancy success rate compared to 20 percent of those taking a placebo. The women taking the propolis did not experience any negative side effects.

Before more modern medicine, doctors used to soak bandages in honey (which contains propolis) before dressing wounds to prevent infection. It has also been used as a topical treatment to apply on burns or minor skin wounds as it contains anti-inflammatory properties, like bioflavenoids, which help reduce swelling and irritation. Its antifungal properties also make it a useful treatment against oral and vaginal yeast infections, and studies on animals have indicated that it can help reduce healing time and pain from oral wounds after tooth extraction or canker sores. It is also recognized as a possible treatment for sores caused by the herpes simplex virus.

But besides its many miracle medical uses, the antioxidants in propolis can even help cure hangovers! Just by adding a few spoonfuls of honey to a glass of water after a night of drinking can help increase the alcohol metabolism process. It can also be spread on toast or crackers, or eaten plain.

The propolis occurring naturally in honey is already being added to many products available for purchase including lip balm, mouthwash, creams, and lotions. Propolis supplements are also becoming more popular as its many attributes continue to be acknowledged and more research on its benefits is done.
